Ubuntu tweak

Ubuntu Tweak is an application which makes configuring Ubuntu easier for everyone. It allows tweaking of many useful desktop and system configuration options which are unavailable via native system tools. And this best thing you can restore your desktop, applications and system configuration by using ubuntu tweak software that totally free of cost not only you can restore you can also create a backup with ubuntu tweak
For download and installing ubuntu tweak
sudo /usr/bin/aptitude install ubuntu-tweak
Or
Add ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
From the command line (terminal):
Run sudo apt-get update
Now to install Ubuntu-Tweak:
Ubuntu Software Center/Synaptic:
Search for Ubuntu-tweak, then click install.
Command-Line (Terminal):
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
After downloading and installation of ubuntu tweak open it you can see two panels in left pane click (select) "desktop recovery"

In right pane you can see more two pane categories and setting

In category choose desktop if you want to restore desktop

In an application when you click application under setting pane you can see all your installed software select any software that you want to restore

Command line
Using command for restore your ubuntu desktop is simple and it doesn’t need any software just go to terminal and type reset command
This command will restore you gnome configuration
rm -rf .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity – This command erases/removes all your gnome-desktop configuration files, forcing a re-spawn at restart. It's safe and effective.
And this will restore your desktop panel
To simply restore the top and bottom panels to their original state, use the following command:
gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel
